MOFCOM Department of Market Operation and Consumption Promotion Comments on the Consumption Market Operation Situation in April of 2017

On May 16, the Head of the MOFCOM Department of Market Operation and Consumption Promotion introduced the consumption market operation situation of China in April 2017.

According to the statistics of the State Statistics bureau, the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 2.73 trillion yuan, with an increase of 10.7% year on year, h the price factor deducted, an actual increase of 9.7% year on year, 0.6 and 0.4 percentage points faster than in the same period last year. The total retail sales of consumer goods in January-April increased 10.2% year on year accumulatively, 0.2 percentage points faster than in the first quarter. The sales of major retail businesses monitored by the MOFCOM increased 4.8% year on year, marking the highest increase of this year.

The Head of MOFCOM Department of Market Operation and Consumption Promotion pointed out that in April the consumption market continued to show a stable and better momentum. The major highlights are as what follows below:

Firstly, the entity retail sales picked up. The entity retail enterprises positively innovate and transform, increase experiential and comprehensive service and constantly integrate online and offline sales. The sales growth increases at different degree. In April, the sales growth of convenience store, shopping mall, special stores, supermarkets and bazaar is respectively 0.4,0.3,0.2,0.3 percentage points faster than those of in March.

Secondly, the growth of online sales accelerated. The online sales of national entity commodities maintained a favorable increasing momentum, up 25.9% year on year in January-April, 0.3 percentage points higher than in the same period last year. The proportion of total retailing of social consuming goods improved to 12.9%, 1.8 percentage points and 0.5 percentage points higher than in the same period last year and the first quarter.

Thirdly, the travel consumption remained stable. The number of tourists and expenditure in the May Day Holiday hit a new record. Driven by the obvious increase of travel demand and price factor, the sales of petroleum and the products above designated size in April increased 12.1% year on year, 15.9 percentage points and 0.8 percentage points higher than in the same period last year and March. Recently, the new-type automobiles have entered the market and the sales of automobile continue its rising momentum since March, up 6.8% year on year, 1.7 percentage points faster than in the same period last year.

Fourthly, the consumption price continues to go up mildly. In April, the level of consumer price increased 1.2% year on year, rising 0.3 percentage points compared with the growth of last month. The core CPI excluding food and energy went up 2.1%, 0.1 percentage points higher than in the previous month, maintaining a basically stable momentum. The price of edible agricultural products in 38 small and medium-sized cities monitored by the MOFCOM decreased 2.1% month on month and the decreasing amplitude narrowed 1.7 percentage points over the previous month. The price of vegetables dropped 7.2% compared with that of March and the price of port went down 3% month on month.

He said that with a stable and better momentum of national economy, the reform of supply side was promoted profoundly, the market vitality was strengthened, and the consumption was upgraded constantly. It is expected that the consumption market in the first half of the year will maintain a stable and rapid development momentum.
